In India, transgenders are socially excluded from the workforce. Astitva, a social enterprise set up by members of the transgender community, aims to bring them back into the social fold by generating employment. It helps them start small businesses and empowers them in the process.
By setting up a food stall inside the institutional areas, and later a chain of food stalls across the city, Astitva is seeking to bring about empowerment for the community by projecting some of them as role models for others to emulate.
Members feel that, one needs to take small steps in the beginning, but in the long-run, the social enterprise can empower as many members of the community as possible.
